Everywhere we work, play or live can make us sick if we suffer from allergies. The culprit is the allergen which is the substance you are allergic too. If we have family members who suffer from allergies, we are definitely at a greater risk to have allergic responses. The allergens invade our bodies and cause our immune system to react and produce histamines that our mast cells use to attack them. It can take several years for an allergy to form and make you sick. Whether you are born with an allergy to a substance or later develop one, you will become symptomatic some time in your life. Common allergens are pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold and cockroaches. Allergens enter our body by touching, inhaling or swallowing them.
Our goal is to avoid allergens from taking up active residence in our homes. Begin at the front door and place a good size rubber mat at the front door. This mat will catch the particles that are on your shoes. Keep your windows shut during allergy season when the pollen counts in your area are elevated. Invest in a good air purifying filter system to allow the air conditioner to filter out the small particles that you breathe into your lungs. Carpets in the bedrooms and bedding can definitely harbor many dust mites that will batter your immune system. Remember that your child's beloved plush animals will become saturated with allergens. Limit the amount you have and wash them in the laundry periodically. Keep your home clean and dry to avoid the formation of mold spores. The key is to keep dampness out of your home, so it is imperative to fix water leaks anywhere in your home. Keep your house clean and vacuum with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. The goal is to catch the allergens and keep them away from anyone suffering from allergies.
