Common Places for House Mold

     Common Places for House Mold

Kate McFarlin

Mold is a very serious problem in a home. Whenever you have a surface that stays wet over time, the potential for mold growth is very high. If you or your family members have asthma or allergies, the mold spores produced by this growth will cause health problems. In addition, a very serious type of house mold, black mold, can even cause serious illness.

House mold prefers dark, moist environments and there are several potential trouble spots that should be monitored in your home. If you see mold growing in these places, remove the existing mold and dry the area out thoroughly. If drywall is affected, it will need to be removed and replaced. If you think your home may have black mold, call in a specialist to determine the strain. Only a professional should remove black mold.

Let's take a look at these trouble spots and what you can do to stop mold from growing.

1. Underneath sinks. Slow sink leaks may go undetected for some time. Look under both the kitchen and bathroom sinks. If the wood underneath the pipes looks wet or moldy, first fix the leak and then replace the wood if necessary.

2. Bathrooms. This moist environment is ideal for the growth of mold and mildew. Look at the edges of your cabinetry and around the base of the toilet. If you see a black substance, don't immediately panic and assume it is black mold. It may be black mildew. Dry the area out and use an anti-bacterial cleaner. If the mold comes back, paint over the affected area with a primer intended to inhibit the growth of mold.

3. Basements. It is very common to see house mold in this dark area of the home. Waterproof cement block walls with a sealant. Check drywall for mold growth regularly. Install a de-humidifier to help take the moisture out of the air.
